Our aim is to study the phenomena of digitalisation of manufacturing and of restructuring of value chains through the analysis of several connected topics starting from an analysis of the current framework about Industry 4.0 (the birth of Industry 4.0; the Italian Government’s plan etc. ) and its feature of being based on two models of integration: vertical integration and horizontal integration of plants and production processes. We want to analyse the potential impact of digitalisation of manufacturing on Italian production chains as producers of parts and components fitted within international chains whose head is located abroad, in particular in Germany. This part will be developed with input-output analysis.
In particular we want to stress the consequences of Industry 4.0 on labour through the presentation of several case-studies: the impact of digitalization on both desk jobs (ABB, a transnational company); and manufacturing jobs (Calvi; Magneti Marelli and Midac – three automotive companies – Costan and Carel – two refrigeration companies); finally, the engineering, with digital technologies, of complex productions (ST Microelectronics). We want to highlight how digitalisation has been changing and is going to change labour: employment levels, demand for wide range skills; the deskilling of some jobs or their disappearance; changing the role of labour: contents, processes, workplaces, flexibility, working time, change in the traditional division of labour; greater density of working performance and stricter control on it.
