Nestor Lopez: From El Caracazo to people’s power; or, a story about the anticipated failure of neoliberal economic package in Venezuela and how it helped promote a socialist approach intended to empower the people

The lecture will use the political and social upheavals unleashed by the schock measures applied in Venezuela in the late and throughout the 90’s to explain the unviability and the high costs of the neoliberal ideology. In this connection, aspects of the general economic situation, including monetary and fiscal policies in Venezuela during that time will be addressed, as well as its connection with the foreign debt problem. A reference to the Greek, Spain and Portugal case will be made.

Néstor López is currently Chargé d’Affairs of the Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. He was entrusted with the task of opening for the first time a Venezuelan diplomatic mission to Ljubljana. Previously, he served as information and communication officer of the Embassy of Venezuela to London. He has served as a teacher at the Universidad Central de Venezuela. He still keeps a chair at the Faculty. As a journalist he has acted as economic and political analyst, was the Managing Director of The Daily Journal, a Venezuelan newspaper, and headed the Information Division of AVILA TV, so far one of the most succesful community-based media in Caracas where he developed a number of shows intended to help viewers analyse news and information from corporate media.

Analiziral bo splošno gospodarsko situacijo v Venezueli v obravnavanem času, med drugim monetarne in fiskalne politike in njihovo povezavo s problemom zunanjega dolga.
